Courtroom Preparedness: Case Preparation, Testimony and Report Writing
This course is pending Tennessee P.O.S.T. approval.

This is one of the most important classes any officer can attend, but they don't.  Even if you're the best
Patrol Officer, Investigator, or Supervisor, and have excellent defensive tactics and shooting skills,
without the skills needed to write a well-articulated report, integrate it into a case report, and effectively
overcome defense tactics while testifying to the facts during trial - everything you've trained for may not
matter.  A good report is as important as defensive tactics when defending yourself and your agency in
matters related to ethics, liability, and risk management.  This training has been specifically developed
to enhance officer performance in the field, while in court, and for supervisory report review.

TOPICS INCLUDE
¦ Methods that can be used to improve an officer’s report writing.
¦ A process to enhance case preparation, as well as verbal and written articulation, through the use of
visualized report writing.
¦ A review of tactics used by both Prosecution and Defense counsel during an adversarial proceeding.
¦ Methods used to support effective report writing and case preparation from the first moment an arrest
becomes likely - and on through the articulation process.
¦ Class exercises to help instill in the field and in-court confidence and establish and maintain officer credibility while
developing an ethical presence and a professional persona while on-scene and on-the-stand.

Practical exercises and class assignments designed to enhance understanding and develop related skills
will be employed throughout this training.

This course has been developed by an instructor who has been certified by the State of Florida to instruct legal topics
to certified personnel in that state.  He has worked closely with prosecutors at both the state and federal levels during
his career, as well as with defense attorneys during plea bargaining and arranging plea agreements.  As a result,
this training incorporates information obtained from both prosecutors and defense attorneys, combined with personal
experience and research, to support instructional goals.  The overall focus for the training will be on effective articulation
for reporting writing and case preparation, in-court presentation, as well as developing skills ranging from enhancing
interview skills for note-taking at the crime-scene, to visualized report writing and to-the-point testimony while in Grand
Jury and on the stand to provide for an efficient and effective court presentation.
